New Release: Hublot Big Bang Spirit of Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic
Given that both Hublot and Veuve Clicquot are owned by LVMH, the Swiss watchmaker's role as the Official Timekeeper of the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic was a natural fit from a corporate partnership perspective. For non-drinkers, Veuve Clicquot is one of the world's largest Champagne houses, with a history dating back to 1772. Due to the brand's popularity and widespread distribution, Veuve Clicquot's classic yellow label bottle (which actually looks more like a golden orange) is often one of the best Champagnes you'll find at your average grocery or convenience store. Last year, to celebrate its role as the Official Timekeeper of the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic, Hublot launched a limited edition of its Spirit of Big Bang Tourbillon, and the brand has just created a follow-up Spirit of Big Bang Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic best luxury watches as its latest 2024 release.
The new Hublot Spirit of Big Bang Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic (reference 642.QK.0110.LR.VCP24) builds on the core foundation of the standard Spirit of Big Bang chronograph, with a barrel-shaped case made of forged carbon with a matte brushed surface, 42 mm in diameter and 14.1 mm thick. Like other models in the Spirit of Big Bang collection, this year's Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic features a sapphire crystal bezel and case back, while the movement is operated via a rubber crown and a pair of angular rectangular chronograph pushers on the right side of the case. The new Spirit of Big Bang Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic is water-resistant to 100 meters, and the limited edition number of each watch (30 in total) is engraved on the edge of the case back, and the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic logo is printed on the surface under the case back window.
While I applaud Hublot for individually numbering the new Spirit of Big Bang Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic (rather than engraving all 30 reviews replica watch with the same limited edition motif), I personally have never been a fan of printed graphics or logos on display casebacks, and I've always thought that custom rotors are a more elegant way to celebrate collaborations. Aside from the Veuve Clicquot signature yellow (actually closer to golden orange) on the seconds hand and strap, the rest of the new Spirit of Big Bang Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic looks like an all-black forged carbon fiber version of Hublot's tonneau-shaped chronograph. However, it's worth noting that Hublot does not currently offer a forged carbon fiber version of the Spirit of Big Bang Chronograph, which makes the new Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic even more unique compared to its core collection siblings.
The new Hublot Spirit of Big Bang Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic features the same dial and hands as the other chronograph-equipped watches in the tonneau-shaped Spirit of Big Bang collection, but in an all-black design with a bright orange center-mounted seconds hand. As you'd expect, the dial consists of a transparent sapphire plate surrounded by a graduated ring with hour markers and a minute track. However, all the various elements that make up the chronograph registers and indices (as well as the hand frame) are finished in black or dark grey to match the hue of its forged carbon case, which allows the Veuve Clicquot “yellow” (aka orange) to stand out against its completely monochrome display appearance. Like other Spirit of Big Bang chronographs, the new limited edition Hublot Spirit of Big Bang Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic is powered by the brand's Cal. HUB4700 automatic chronograph movement, which is based on the basic architecture of the Zenith El Primero. The Cal. HUB4700 runs at 36,000 vph (5 Hz) and has a power reserve of around 50 hours, and while it shares a design with one of the most famous chronograph movements of all time, so performance should be solid, it doesn't quite have the bragging rights of a Hublot in-house design. Finally, the Spirit of Big Bang Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic comes in a Veuve Clicquot themed box and comes with two rubber straps in either bright orange or black alligator leather, with folding clasps in titanium and black ceramic.
While the Spirit of Big Bang Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic is admittedly a rather niche product, the watch itself feels like it could easily exist (without the caseback inscription) as one of the brand's standard production models. However, the new Spirit of Big Bang Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic will be produced in a limited edition of 30 pieces, some of which are bound to be claimed by players, tournament organizers, and Hublot/Veuve Clicquot super fans.
